If you’re like most Americans – especially those aged 50+, you are probably eating at restaurants much more often today than when you were growing up.
There are so many reasons for eating out – from convenience to necessity, from socialization to celebrations. You get to avoid the shopping, cooking and clean-up and benefit from the variety and professionalism of creative chefs. And let’s face it, eating out is fun!
You probably also know that healthy eating at home is easier than at restaurants, where portion sizes are often large, and there are generally more calories and sodium, fewer fruits and vegetables, and less fiber – along with lots of temptations – sauces, appetizers, breads, drinks and desserts. Identifying the healthier choices at restaurants is challenging, because menu titles and descriptions are not always complete. That is, every ingredient isn’t necessarily disclosed and nutrition information isn’t available, so it’s hard to know exactly what you’re getting.
At Oasis, we recognize the importance of healthy lifestyles and good nutrition, so to help members find healthier choices at restaurants, we are teaming up with the dietitians and health professionals at Healthy Dining, a California-based company dedicated to helping Americans of all ages find and enjoy the best choices at a variety of restaurants nationwide.
It’s easy. From any computer or digital device, log onto HealthyDiningFinder.com and type in your ZIP or city and state – or click on “Find Restaurants Near You.” You’ll then access a list of restaurants in the area that offer a selection of menu items recommended by Healthy Dining’s dietitians, which focus on lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. These menu items also contain fewer calories and less fat, saturated fat and sodium than found in your “typical” restaurant meal.
The site also features blogs, reviews, recipes, an Ask the RD column and more – to inspire healthy living and eating, especially at restaurants. You can also sign up for the Healthy Dining newsletter – and enter their weekly contest to win a $25 gift card to your favorite Healthy Dining restaurant.
